With roots in a tradition where music, nature and way of life are closely intertwined, they work with sound in a way that opens up an entirely unique soundscape: overtones, undertones and rhythms that arise directly from the voice. Since their start in the early 1990s, the quartet has established itself as a distinct voice internationally. They have toured the world for several decades, often with a high number of concerts annually, reaching both established stages and new audiences. A wide range of collaborations – from DJ projects to contemporary music and film – has helped expand their expression without losing their grounding in tradition. Through releases such as Spirits of Tuva, Children of the Otter and later vinyl releases of earlier recordings, they have shown a willingness to present the material in new formats. Their music has also been used in film and TV, and a larger audience has discovered them through digital platforms in recent years. On stage, HUUN-HUUR-TU work closely and precisely. They alternate between various forms of throat singing, accompanied by traditional instruments such as the igil, toschpulur and percussion. The result is an expression that is both structured and open, where small nuances in tone and rhythm are given great space.
